It's time to start looking at the cool bikes for kids. Your little one isn't ready to learn how to ride a big bike, but they're ready to start training.

Right off the bat, as a toddler, they can learn to ride a tricycle. That gives them the feel for pedaling and steering, which is a step toward learning to ride a bike. It will also give them a fun way to exercise and strengthen their legs.

Soon they will graduate to pedal bikes for small children. This puts them on two wheels (plus the training wheels for balance) so that the begin to get the feel for a real bicycle, even though they aren't quite able to balance, like they would need to do on a bicycle.

There are always risks that children will face while they are learning and developing. They will bump their head, burn their fingers, and take tumbles. As parents, we want to protect our children, but we can't be there 100% of the time to keep them from harms way. We can, however, be mindful of the environment that we allow around them.

Once your child begins to ride their first bicycle or tricycle, they will face the risk of falling and getting hurt. Fortunately, they are traveling at very slow speeds, so the typical fall is not catastrophic. Yet, the opportunity for learning and development far exceeds the risk of minor bumps and bruises - not to mention the hours of enjoyment that your child will receive.

• Will my child develop strength and coordination by using this item?
• How much am I willing to spend for this type of toy?
• How much space is available for the child to ride on his/her trike or bike?
• What is my underlying belief about the benefits of a balance bike over a pedal bike with training wheels or a tricycle?
